While curiosity about interracial marriages is ever present on all sides, we seldom hear the perspective of the “other,” the spouse who is not Indian. The South Asian color hierarchy is not something we can wish away. But if you do, it’s preferable to marry a White man/woman. The warning that many of us may have heard growing up - ‘don’t marry a BMW’ (Black, Muslim or White). However, in the South Asian immigrant community, acceptance of multiracial relationships can sometimes be fraught with challenges. Interracial marriages are becoming more commonplace today with families blending cultures, traditions and lives.
